Let’s be honest: outdoor heaters are usually a gamble. Either they’re too weak to fight a breeze, or they’re a safety hazard the second it starts raining. That’s why we lean on IP66-rated enclosures. In plain English? It means the guts of the heater are sealed tight. Dust stays out, and high-pressure water—like a heavy storm or a poolside splash—won’t fry the electronics. You can leave them out in the elements without worrying that a rainy Tuesday will short out your entire patio.
Heat That Hits Instantly
Most heaters try to warm up the air around you. The problem is, if there’s any wind, that warm air just blows away. These infrared units do things differently. They send out waves of energy that go straight to your skin and clothes. There is no waiting around for the air to get cozy. You flip the switch, the filament glows, and you feel the heat in milliseconds. It’s basically like stepping into a patch of sunlight in the middle of January.
Getting it “Smart”
Connecting these to your smart home is simpler than it sounds. We basically put a heavy-duty WiFi or Zigbee switch (a contactor) between your hub and the heater. Your phone sends a tiny signal to the relay, and the relay handles the heavy lifting of powering the lamps. This is where it gets fun. You can set up a “Patio Mode.” One tap on your phone, and your outdoor lights dim while the heaters kick in. **One big warning though:**Don’t try to plug these into a shared outlet. These lamps pull a massive amount of power. If you don’t give them their own dedicated 20A circuit, you’ll be tripping your breakers every time you want to stay warm.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
Here’s the trade-off: that IP66 seal that keeps the rain out also traps heat inside the box. To keep the control boards from literally baking, we use oversized aluminum heat sinks to pull that heat away. Just make sure you don’t cram the heater into a tight soffit with no room to breathe. If there’s zero airflow, the safety cutout will trip just to keep the wiring from melting. Give it some space, and it’ll run perfectly.
