If you’ve ever run a long automated spray line, you know the struggle. You try to find that “perfect” heat setting, but it never quite works. You end up with a center that’s barely cured or edges that look like they’ve been toasted in an oven. It’s frustrating. The fix is actually pretty simple: stop treating your oven like one big toaster. Instead, use zoned infrared (IR) heating. This lets you map the heat to the actual speed of your line.
How Zoned Heating Actually Works
Think of your curing tunnel as a series of stages. First, you need a gentle zone. This is just for the solvent flash-off—low heat, no rush. Then, you hit the middle zones. This is where the real work happens, driving the core temperature of the metal up to that sweet spot where it actually cures. Finally, you have a finishing zone to make sure everything is fully cross-linked before the piece hits the cooling rack. The best part? You can tweak the wattage and duty cycle for each section. This kills those annoying temperature spikes that cause bubbling or that dreaded “orange peel” texture. And if you need to speed up the conveyor to hit a deadline, you just bump up the power in the middle zones to keep the soak time consistent.
The Gear You’ll Actually Need
I always recommend short-wave quartz lamps for this. Why? Because they penetrate the coating fast. They heat the metal from the inside out, which stops the surface from “skinning” over and trapping solvents underneath. But here is a pro tip:**do not rely on ambient air sensors.**They’re way too slow and won’t tell you what’s actually happening to your part. You need a PID controller with thermocouples placed right at the substrate level. Also, keep an eye on your housing. High-wattage tubes put out a ton of radiant heat. If your tunnel isn’t properly insulated and vented, you’re going to warp your conveyor rails. And that’s a headache you don’t want.
The Trade-off
Now, total control comes with a price. Zoning makes your wiring a lot more complex. More zones mean more contactors and, frankly, more things that can break. To keep things from falling apart, use heavy-duty connectors. This is a factory environment; things get bumped, shaken, and dirty. You want hardware that can take a beating so you aren’t hunting down intermittent arcs at 3 AM.
