Why we stopped using hot air for coil coating
Most people are used to the old way: giant hot air ovens. The air gets hot, then the metal gets hot, then finally the coating cures. It’s a long, indirect trip. It wastes a ton of energy, and more than that, it often leaves the bottom of the coating under-cured. We do things differently. We use shortwave infrared (SWIR) radiators to just… skip the air entirely.
Heating from the inside out
Here is the trick: Shortwave IR hits the exact frequency that industrial coatings love to absorb. Instead of waiting for the surface to warm up slowly, the energy punches right through the coating and hits the metal underneath. The metal heats up instantly. Then, it radiates that heat back up through the coating. It’s basically curing from the inside out. This is huge because it stops that annoying “skin-over” effect—where the top dries too fast, traps solvents underneath, and ruins the finish. When you cure the whole thickness at once, your bond strength jumps about 3x. It just sticks better.
The nuts and bolts
To make this work, we use high-wattage quartz halogen tubes. They pack a massive amount of heat into a tiny space. The best part? They respond instantly. We’re talking milliseconds. You can tweak the temperature to match your line speed on the fly without waiting for a massive oven to “catch up.” But, you can’t just slap these in and walk away. You have to get the reflector geometry exactly right. If they’re slightly off, you’ll get hot spots that scorch the coating. And you’ll want a rock-solid power supply. A few voltage spikes and you’ll burn through your filaments.
What it actually does for your floor
The difference in your workspace is immediate. You can take a 20-meter convection tunnel and replace it with a 5-meter IR bank. That is a lot of reclaimed floor space. Plus, the warm-up time is a joke. You don’t have to come in hours early to get the ovens up to temp. You just flip the switch, set your controller, and you’re running. It’s fast. Really fast. And it just makes the whole day easier.
