
Dealing with that annoying “skin” in powder coating
Ever pull a part out of the oven and see those tiny pinholes or bubbles? It’s frustrating. Usually, it happens because the surface dried too fast, creating a “skin” that traps gases and solvents inside. It might look okay at first glance, but since the base didn’t bond properly, the whole thing can just peel right off. We found a way to fix this by changing how the heat actually hits the part.
Heating from the inside out
Most people use convection ovens, which just heat the air. But we do things differently with shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps. These aren’t your average bulbs; they’re high-energy tools that shoot radiation straight through the powder to hit the metal underneath. So, the metal gets hot first. That heat then pushes outward through the powder. Because it’s moving from the inside out, the solvents can actually escape to the surface and evaporate before the top layer seals shut. The result? A finish that’s dense, smooth, and completely pore-free.
The catch (and the specs)
Now, you can’t just throw these lamps into any old setup. To get that kind of penetration, we’re packing a lot of wattage into small quartz envelopes. It getshot. If your cooling fans aren’t up to the task, you’re going to fry your wiring or warp your fixtures. It’s a lot of power, so the housing needs to be built for it. We stick with halogen-filled quartz tubes because they ramp up almost instantly. You don’t have to sit around waiting for a massive oven to warm up; you just trigger the cure and go.
Making it work on your floor
The trick is to pair these lamps with a precise controller. If you just blast them at full power, you’ll scorch the coating, no matter which direction the heat is coming from. Here is how we usually handle it: hit it with a high-intensity burst to get that substrate penetration, then dial it back to a lower-wattage “soak” to let the cross-linking finish. It’s a simple two-step process that makes a world of difference.
