
How to keep your gloss without wasting energy
Getting solvents out of a powder coating without killing that mirror-like finish is a total balancing act. Most of us have been there: you bake it too hot or leave it in too long, and suddenly your gloss is gone, leaving you with a dull, flat finish that looks cheap. Why shortwave IR actually works
Think of it this way: a convection oven just heats up the air. It’s slow. But these shortwave IR lamps? They shoot energy directly into the coating. It pushes the solvents out from the bottom up. This is huge because it stops that annoying “skinning” effect—where the top cures first and traps everything underneath. When that happens, you get pinholes. Or worse, you lose your gloss. Shortwave IR just moves things along faster.
Getting the hardware right
When you’re swapping these lamps, don’t wing it. You have to match the wattage and voltage to your power supply exactly. If you don’t, the lamps will burn out way before they should. Most of these use quartz envelopes to handle the heat, but here is something I see engineers forget all the time:the reflectors. If your reflectors are dirty, you could be losing 20% of your heat density. Then you do the logical thing—you crank up the heat to compensate—and that’s exactly when you start ruining the gloss on your parts. Keep them clean. It’s a simple fix that saves a lot of headaches.
The real-world trade-offs
High-density IR is fast. Really fast. But it can be aggressive. If your parts have different thicknesses—say, a heavy boss next to a thin edge—the thin parts are going to heat up way faster. You can’t just blast the power to save a few minutes. If you do, you’ll scorch the edges or even warp the metal. The trick is to tune your conveyor speed or use zoned pulsing. It takes a little patience to dial in, but it’s the only way to keep the finish perfect. Oh, and make sure your cooling fans are actually doing their job, or you’ll fry the lamp ends.
