
The Struggle with Preheating Wide-Format Low-E Glass
If you’re running a wide-format Low-E line, you know the headache of standard infrared lamps. Once your glass hits that 3-meter mark, the usual setup just doesn’t cut it. You can’t just line up a bunch of short lamps and hope for the best—you’ll end up with cold spots all over the place. That’s why we build custom, ultra-long continuous heating units. The 3-Meter Headache: Handling Heat Density
Scaling a heater up to over 3 meters isn’t as simple as just making the tube longer. You run into a real problem with voltage drop. If you try to push high wattage through a 3-meter tube without a plan, the current draw is massive. You’ll be tripping breakers or melting your leads before you even get started. We fix this by tweaking the internal filament winding and voltage specs. We balance the ohms carefully. The goal? Making sure the center of the lamp doesn’t burn out while the ends are still shivering.
Quartz and the Low-E Fight
Low-E glass is stubborn. It reflects a huge chunk of thermal radiation right back at you. To get around this, we use specific quartz compositions and coatings. We basically shift the emission spectrum to hit the exact “sweet spot” where the glass coating actually absorbs the heat. But there’s a physical problem, too: gravity. Over a long span, quartz wants to sag. If the tube dips, you get uneven gaps between the lamp and the glass, and your temperature uniformity goes right out the window. We use heavy-wall quartz to keep everything straight and tight.
The Practical Side of Things
We design these units to slide right into your existing oven frames. But a word of warning: these things are fragile during install. They’re long, awkward, and made of glass. One wrong bump while you’re wiring them up and—crack—there goes your afternoon. You have to handle them with a lot of care. Plus, you’ve got to think about the heat. A 3-meter array puts out a staggering amount of energy. If your oven’s exhaust isn’t sized right, you’ll get “heat soak,” which can actually warp or damage the machine housing around the heater. Make sure your venting can keep up.
